The park Los Haitises
is one of ecological attractions of the Dominican Republic.
National Park Los Haitises is located in the north-east
of the country, it lies south of the Bay of Samana, to Sanchez until
Sabana de la Mar.
Landscape, dotted with small islands, with wooded hills contrast
with the rest of the country.
The park is a protected area with a large mangrove, with a sea bay
of San Lorenzo and a terrestrial part consists of a subtropical
rainforest with many small hills. In this park are also many caves
(La Linea, Cueva Arena ...) with pictographs and petroglyphs left
by the Tainos, the original inhabitants of the island of Hispaniola.
Los Haitises Park is a reserve and a sanctuary for many species
of birds, fish, shellfish ... some of which are endemic to the Dominican
Republic and the Caribbean.
Visit the park is by boat, party Sabana de la Mar, Samana. Excursions
are organized from the hotels
in Las Terrenas, Samana
hotels and Las Galeras. This is one of the main sights
of the Samana Peninsula.
Mangrove
Mangrove of the Los Haitises park is the largest mangrove forest in the Caribbean, it is consisting of a maze of mangroves white and roses. Mangrove is the oviposition site of numerous species of fish where the fry can grow up safe from predators.
Forest
Forest Park los Haitises is a subtropical moist forest type with a typical tropical flora. Trails are available to visit this forest and discover the rich flora and fauna of this reserve. With luck it is possible to see the smallest mammal, the solenodonte, snakes ... and especially many birds.
Caves
Caves of National
Park Los Haitises have served the Tainos habitats, some
of which can be visited (Do not use flash to take pictures as this
will deteriorate the drawings left by the Tainos).
La Reyna La Línea, La Arena, San Lorenzo, San Gabriel, Cueva Fun
Fun ... are some of the caves in the park.
The first studies of rock art in the park Los Haitises is from 1869,
but despite a wealth and variety no detailed scientific study has
yet been performed.

National Park Los
Haitises is located north-east of the Dominican Republic,
the entry is to Sabana de la Mar, but boat tours are also from Samana.
Hours: 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. every day.
