The National Pantheon
is a mausoleum where lie the important people of the Dominican
Republic.
It is a monument in the Colonial Zone in Santo Domingo of the eighteenth
century with a remarkable architecture, was originally a Jesuit
church and a tobacco factory and a theater. In 1956 the dictator
Trujillo ordered to restore the building and turns him into a pantheon
to house the remains of the heroes of the nation's civilian and
military.
Some of the 42 people and personalities buried in the National Pantheon:
Antonio Duverge: Military of Puerto Rico of French origin who was
very active during the war of independence of the Dominican Republic.
Gregorio Luperon: Was a soldier and politician Dominicans. He was
interim president of the Dominican Republic between 1879 and 1880.
Salome Urena: Was a poet and teacher of the nineteenth Dominicans.
Pedro Santana: He was the first constitutional president of the
Dominican Republic.
The National Pantheon has about 35 spaces for future heroes of the
Dominican Republic and an unmarked grave plaque
dedicated to the Unknown Soldier. A guard dressed in gala constantly
on guard is at the entrance of the monument.
